Okay guys, I just finished reading The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins!  Let me tell you, I am in love with these books.  The first one more than the second!  If you are not familiar with the books let me give you a brief overview.

The story takes place in the Nation of Panem that consists of the Capitol and 12 districts.  Every year one male and one female are chosen from the districts to battle to the death in the Hunger Games.  This story follows Katniss who volunteered to go instead of her sister Prim and Peeta on their journey to survive the hunger games.  What was the strategy unbeknownst to Katniss?  Their mentor Haymitch, played the star-crossed lovers storyline that changed the rules of the game.  Instead of one winner there could be two for the district.  This bothered me because Katniss had a really close relationship with Gale, a guy she hunted with and was very close to.  The players even get stylist!  Cinna was the stylist for Katniss and created a memorable outfit for “the girl on fire” to wear during the opening ceremony.   The Hunger Games will be a film, with Collins currently working on the script.  This is a definite add to your summer reading list.

Catching Fire picks up were the Hunger Games end.  We follow the fall out from Katniss and Peeta both winning and learn of the rebellions in the 12 districts against the Capitol.  We meet some new characters and find out about District 13, which was supposed to have been destroyed.  In this book Katniss says that she choses Gale but forces are always working against her.  She and Peeta end up back in the games thanks to the Quarter Quill along with other victors from the 12 districts.  Chaos ensues and Collins leaves us with a cliff hanger and waiting for the third book this fall!  All I will say is this:

  • Peeta is missing.
  • Katniss finds out the master plan.
  • The rebellion has begun.

Once you read the Hunger Games you will have to read Catching Fire.  Who is team Gale?  I am!
