The Film (2008)

The film Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging is an adaptation of the first two books by Louise Rennison.  I saw this one night on Nickelodeon and instantly fell in love with the characters.  Fun fact, this is the first Nick film that was rated PG-13.  The movie follows fourteen year old, Georgia Nicolson and her friends “The Ace Gang, ” on their quest for independence and boyfriends!  Georgia has quite a few love interest.  First, there is the sex god, Robbie.  Georgia and the gang do everything all the way to stalking him around town and showing up at his parent’s store.  The drawback is that Robbie is hanging out with Lindsay.  Or who Georgia calls, Wet Lindsay, a popular girl at her school.  This leads to her   second interest, her snogging tutor, Peter Dyer.  This guy is hilarious because girls come to him to learn how to snog!  The difference in teaching Georgia is that she is good at snogging and Peter falls “in love” with her.  This causes some interesting fall out with her crush Robbie and a funny moment at a party that include nickers.  In a quest to get more of Robbie’s attention she goes out with Dave the Laugh, one of Robbie’s mates.  They go on a date to see the Stiff Dylans, Robbie’s band.  In the end Georgia ends up all alone by burning bridges with her best friend Jas, hurting Dave’s feelings, and ruining her chances with Robbie.

We get to see Georgia’s interaction with her family.  She loves her sister and is not interested in her parents at all.  Her father gets a job offer out-of-town and wants the family to move when all of the drama is going on in Georgia’s life.  We get to see her show real emotion when she goes to her father’s office and talks about how she doesn’t want her father to move and wishes he could work at home.

Everything works out and comes together at Georgia’s surprise birthday party at a club!  Robbie choses her, her dad comes home, all of her friends including Jas is there and Dave the Laugh is introduced to Georgia’s friend Ellen and Peter also meets a girl.  The movie left me wanting more.  I wish that they would make another film or turn it into one of those BBC shows that I love to watch!  The movie is vair, vair good and I give it a 4/5 for hilariosity and maturiosity!

The Books(10)

Louise Rennison is awesome for writing this book series!  I hope to see more from her.  After reading all of the books it made the movie more hilarious.  It also disturbed me a bit because Robbie seems a bit older in the books.  Some of the books could have been combined but other than that I have no complaints.  The book list includes the following:

  • Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging
  • On the Bright Side, I’m Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God
  • Knocked Out by My Nunga- Nungas
  • Dancing In My Nuddy Pants
  • Away Laughing on a Fast Camel
  • Then He Ate My Boy Entrancers
  • Startled by His Furry Shorts
  • Love is a Many Trousered Thing
  • Stop in the Name of Pants
  • Are These My Basoomas I See Before Me?

Some of the books titles are published differently.  I guess due to the conservative Americans, ha, ha.    The books even include a dictionary for readers who can’t figure out some of the terms used in the book.  It is written in a journal style completely from Georgia’s perspective.  I think this clouds the descriptions of some of the characters because in the book Lindsay is described more of a geek than the popular girl who was portrayed in the film.  We also get introduced to characters that are not in the movie and you find out who Georgia picks for her boyfriend.

**Spoiler Alert**

It’s not Robbie and that is all I am saying.

If you would like a good summer read I say get this series.  Check out the Georgia Nicolson website.
